Academic Oral Language • Types of Listening • Social and Academic (HO ①) • Two-way verses One-way • Power of Pause - good practice to follow: • With general education, teacher pauses for 3 seconds anticipating response. • With English Language learners, teacher pauses for 5-7 seconds anticipating response. • Facts that give you reason to pause: • 70% of waking time is spent communicating…..45% of that time is spent listening. • 10 minutes following a presentation, the average person retains 50% of what they have heard….two days later, 25% is retained. Status of Title III Plan - ELD Committee • Revise Special Ed EL handbook to include strategies regarding Academic Oral Language and Peer Assisted Learning. • Develop staff training for providers based on needs assessment results. • Test Taking Strategies training (2/11) • AOL/PAL training (6/11) • October – ELD committee will make recommendations for modification and/or follow-up to Support Team based on quarterly progress reports (Coordinator Monitoring) • SDAIE training – October 2011 • EL Manual – December 2011 • Review curricula needs – October 2011; training by Feb 2012.
