Thirsting After Righteousness B.A.S.I.C. Training
Obey Your Thirst!?! • Maybe there’s more to the Sprite commercial than meets the eye. • There is a good thirst – which we need to obey. • Not for physical food or drink. • But for the Living God! • For Living Water
As The Deer… • “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” • Do you have this panting soul?
Psalm 63: 1 -- O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
Matthew 5:6 -- Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. • These are “blessed” hunger pangs. • “There’s a God-shaped hole in every heart that only God can fill.”
Sadly, few have this intense soul hunger • Amos 8:11-13 -- "The days are coming,“ declares the Sovereign LORD, "when I will send a famine through the land— not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD. Men will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the LORD, but they will not find it. "In that day "the lovely young women and strong young men will faint because of thirst.
Psalm 14:1-3 -- The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. • All have turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.
Proverbs 2:2-6 – • If we will be bold exceptions to the rule, we must: • Listen carefully to instruction and wisdom • Pray for understanding • Search for wisdom as if it were hidden treasure • Because God gives wisdom and gave us the Bible for our knowledge and understanding.
True spiritual meals come from God’s revealed word: • Psalm 119:9-11 -- How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Come To The Feast! • God provides for us an everlasting feast. • Isaiah 55:1-3 – “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters…come, buy and eat!...Why spend money on what is not bread, and you labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you….”
We can only find our soul’s satisfaction with LIVING WATER. • So Jesus told the Samaritan woman in Jn. 4 • All she had to do was ask and He would provide. • We are in the same situation. If we will seek for true wisdom and understanding in God’s Word we will find answers to all our soul’s needs. • Jesus is living water that fills us and overflows as a stream into the world.
How hungry are you for God? • 1 Peter 2:2-3 -- Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
If we hunger and thirst after righteousness: • We will be filled up to overflowing with His wisdom and understanding. • We will no longer be empty and susceptible to the cravings and empty desires of the world. • We will not give in to the lusts and desires that wage war against the soul. • Do we pant for God as the deer pants for the water?
