Journal • Earlier in the year we talked about reading things other than books. In your journal, write about what you think those other things might be. • How do you think you can read something that might not have words?
What is rhetoric? • The use of words to persuade, either in writing or speech. • Ethos: ethical appeals that attempt to persuade the reader or listener by focusing on the qualifications or the character of the speaker. • Pathos: emotional appeals, attempt to persuade the reader or listener by appealing to the senses and emotions. • Logos: logical appeals, attempt to persuade readers or listeners by leading them down the road of logic and causing them to come to their own conclusions.

Pathos • These appeals usually include statements with vivid sensory details, which awaken the senses and perhaps manipulate the emotions of the audience. • Brave Speech
Logos • Logical appeals state the facts and show how the facts are interrelated. If/then statements are examples of logical appeals. • Commuter
Choose an ad and • After you have selected an ad, draft a paragraph that analyzes the ad for the following: • Target audience • Advertising techniques • Rhetorical appeals • 2. Take notes in the graphic organize on page 76.
Peer Review • - Now, take your ad analysis and trade with the person SITTING TO YOUR LEFT. • - In their draft: • •Identify the intended audience. • •Comment on the advertising techniques and rhetorical appeals. • •Explain why the appeals and techniques are appropriate for that particular audience. • - Be prepared to share what you find with the class.
