  1. The MagicWorldofBiologyand Chemistry Part I.Review Game: Jeopardy Day 2: Mrs. Dorcas Green and Ms. Arielle Darden

  2. Housekeeping • Put time and effort into your responses (Write Neatly) • Be sure to complete your data tables • Be sure to put your units on your measurements. Ex. 59 vs. 59grams • Percent Change in Mass: Final Mass - Initial Mass x 100 = _________ Initial Mass Example. The initial mass of a gummy bear is 5 grams. You put it in freshwater and check its final mass. You find that it is 8 grams. What is the percent change in mass? 8g-5g x 100= 3g x 100= 60% 5g 5g

  3. Gummy Bear Exploration

  4. Solute vs. Solvent • A solution is composed of two parts: a solute and a solvent. • Solute- substance that is dissolved within a solution. (being dissolved) Ex. Salt, Sugar Solvent- a substance that dissolves the solute (the dissolver) Ex. Water is the universal solvent.

  5. Examples • Kool-Aid- What is/are the solute(s)?

  6. Solutes and Solvents

  7. Gummy Bear Lab Exploration

  8. Reflection: • What did you learn from Day 1? Movement of Molecules, Osmosis, Diffusion, Equilibrium, Quantitative and Qualitative Data, Inertia, Raw Vs. Boiled Eggs, gummy bears, Solutions.

  9. The MagicWorldofBiologyand Chemistry Mentos Exploration Day 2: Mrs. Dorcas Green and Ms. Arielle Darden

  10. Video Time • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWrklFuYnb0

  11. What is a Geyser? • A geyser is a hot spring that intermittently sends up fountain-like jets of water and steam into the air • Source : http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/geyser

  12. Geysers and Mentos? • Just as we modeled the process of Osmosis with gummy bears and potato cores, we are going to model the process that occurs with geysers.

  13. Mentos Investigation • Experiment will be conducted in two parts: Part I: Which color of Mentos will produce the tallest geyser? Part II: Does changing the surface area of the Mentos affect the height of the geyser? Why might the experiment be done in two parts?

  14. What is the surface area? • Definition of Surface area: • The sum of all the areas of the shapes found within an object. • In general, surface area is the outside part or uppermost layer of something. According to mathematicians, the surface area is the sum of all the areas of all the shapes that cover the surface of the object. Shapes include a square, cube, ‎rectangular prism, and ‎sphere or any polygon • http://www.math.com/tables/geometry/surfareas.htm

  15. Uses for Surface Area • Not only is surface area relevant to Math, it is also useful in the bodies of living organisms. • For each slide, determine the advantage of increased surface area for the organism.

  16. Surface Area Example # 1 • Why is it important that the small intestine has a large surface area?

  17. Surface Area Example # 2 • How is increased surface area in the lungs important for survival?

  18. Surface Area Example # 3 • Why do clam gills have increased surface area?

  19. Surface Area Example # 4 • Why is increased surface area in plant roots and leaves important?

  20. Which leaf would produce the greatest amount of carbon dioxide in 60 seconds? Explain Leaf A Leaf B

  21. Question • How can we increase the surface area of our Mentos?

  22. Mentos Investigation Generate your hypotheses to the following questions: Part I: Which color of Mentos will produce the tallest geyser? Part II: Does changing the surface area of the Mentos affect the height of the geyser?

  23. Look at your handouts…. • There is a small portion of the procedure that you will utilize to get started. • You will be working to design your own experiments today!!!!! Get Excited!!! • We will be testing our hypotheses outside!

  24. Lets Go!
