This paper discusses the alignment studies status and the fiducialisation of a Drive Beam magnet (DBQ) in a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). The objective is to determine the most reliable method of measurement and estimate the associated error budget. The paper also explores ways of measurements and provides conclusions on the design and compatibility of the mock-up with CMM constraints.

Alignment studies status: Fiducialisation of a DBQ in a CMM BE/ABP-SU/ Introduction • Objective: to fiducialise with a few microns the magnetic axis of a Drive Beam magnet (DBQ) in a CMM using the vibrating wire method (cf. Juan Garcia Perez). • That will allow: • To demonstrate the feasibility of this kind of fiducialisation, • To determine the most reliable method of measurements, • To estimate the associated error budget, • To size the CMM needed to perform this kind of fiducialisation in the frame of Main Linac (DBQ and MBQ), • To extrapolate the method to quads of DBS and final focus (where the tolerances of alignment are even tighter). Alignment studies status: Fiducialisation of a DBQ in a CMM BE/ABP-SU/ A priori data Specifications of CMM Leitz Infinity • Optical measurements possible • Possible to adapt accessories on the measuring head (can support 1 kg) Ahmed CHERIF, Hélène Mainaud Durand, Sylvain GRIFFET, 30/03/2012
Alignment studies status: Fiducialisation of a DBQ in a CMM BE/ABP-SU/ A priori data WPS sensors The WPS (Wire Positioning System) sensors measure radial and vertical offsets (LT, LV) with respect to a stretched wire. The resolution of these sensors is 0.2µm. A 3 balls device allows a micrometric repositioning. The sensors are calibrated to determine the location of their center with respect to the 3 balls. If the locations of the 3 balls are known (by CMM measurements for example), the WPS is able to provide absolute measurements. Wire Mounted to the object WPS + fiducialisation = location of component axes Ahmed CHERIF, Hélène Mainaud Durand, Sylvain GRIFFET, 30/03/2012
Alignment studies status: Fiducialisation of a DBQ in a CMM BE/ABP-SU/ A priori data Target of accuracy The expected accuracies for the DBQ and its associated BPM are defined by D. Schulte in the paper “Beam Dynamic and the CLIC Module”, EDMS n°1032793. The values visible in the following table are the rms accuracies along each axis (transversal and vertical). Alignment studies status: Fiducialisation of a DBQ in a CMM BE/ABP-SU/ • Alignment status • Design of a girder mock-up • The mock-up will be composed by: • A supporting device like a small CLIC girder, • An adjustment system to move the DBQ, • 3 stretched wire devices (2 for alignment and 1 for fiducialisation), • 6 capacitive WPS sensors • Several fiducials on DBQ • (sphere holders, not shown) Ahmed CHERIF, Hélène Mainaud Durand, Sylvain GRIFFET, 30/03/2012
Alignment studies status: Fiducialisation of a DBQ in a CMM BE/ABP-SU/ • Alignment status • Design of a girder mock-up • The principle is the following: • The vibrating wire device is static, • The girder mock-up is also static, • The DBQ will be adjusted to align its zero on the vibrating wire, • When the good location is obtained, it is fastened, • Performing of the fiducialisation. Alignment studies status: Fiducialisation of a DBQ in a CMM BE/ABP-SU/ Alignment status Ways of measurements When the DBQ location is fastened. In the CMM there will be several ways of measurements, thus redundancy. The different solutions to geometrically link the DBQ zero to the stretched wires are currently the following: Probing of the 6 WPS interfaces (3 balls by interface) and of the DBQ fiducials the DBQ location is determined in the coordinate system of the stretched wires by the combination of CMM/WPS measurements. Optical measurements of the 3 wires by the CMM no disassembly of WPS sensors. WPS measurements of the 3 wires by the CMM measurements are performed by a WPS fixed on the CMM head instead of the probe. NB : the 2 last solutions require to link the WPS sensor interfaces on the girder mock-up to DBQ fiducials with additional probing measurements. However if some DBQ fiducials could be measured by optical device, the solution 2 will not required a manipulation on the CMM head. Ahmed CHERIF, Hélène Mainaud Durand, Sylvain GRIFFET, 30/03/2012
Alignment studies status: Fiducialisation of a DBQ in a CMM BE/ABP-SU/ Conclusions • The mock-up design will be compatible with CMM constraints, • We have to determine the type of wire to use, • We have to test / develop optical and WPS solutions adapted to the CMM, • What about the size of the magnetic fiducialisation device? • Its accuracy? • Is it possible to fiducialise / tune the BPM by the same way? • Could we have the design of the DBQ which will be fiducialised? • And of course all theses studies are useful if the stability of the magnetic axis of the quadrupoles with respect to operating current and temperature is checked.
