EMC Infrastructure for Microsoft Applications in the Private Cloud EMC Symmetrix VMAX 10K, EMC VNX5700, EMC RecoverPoint/Cluster Enabler, Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, Microsoft Hyper-V Technical Presentation EMC Solutions Group
Agenda • Solution Overview • Application Design and Test Results • System Management • DR Design and Test Results • Summary
Hyper-V Cluster and Virtual Machines • Distribute virtual machines in the same application role into different Hyper-V nodes for redundancy • 200 GB boot LUNs for each virtual machine • All DB and log LUNs as pass-through disks
FAST VP Configuration • Each application has its own policy, but shares the same tiers
Application Design and Test Results FAST VP baseline testing without RecoverPoint replication in place RecoverPointCRR protection impact on applications: 25 msnetwork latency (round trip) 85 ms network latency (round trip)
Exchange Server 2010 Design • Exchange DAG configuration • Exchange virtual machine design
Exchange Sever 2010 Performance Result FAST VP with RecoverPoint • RecoverPoint CRR replication has little impact on Exchange Server 2010 performance FAST VP baseline • ~60% CPU usage on MBX servers • Healthy disk latency
SQL Sever 2012 Performance Result FAST VP with RecoverPoint • RecoverPoint CRR replication has little impact on SQL Server 2012 performance FAST VP baseline • ~9,000 IOPS and ~80% CPU on two SQL Servers • Healthy disk latency
SharePoint Sever 2010 Performance Result FAST VP with RecoverPoint • RecoverPoint CRR replication has little impact on SharePoint Server 2010 performance FAST VP baseline • 58 Passed Tests/sec • 35,308 heavy users at 10% concurrency • Healthy response time
VMAX 10K Performance Result • Array utilization: • BE UT: ~50% • FE UT: ~25% • Disk UT: • FC & SATA: ~60% • Flash: ~30%
System Management • SCVMM for VM deployment • ESI for storage provisioning • SCOM for monitoring
DR Design and Test Results RecoverPoint compression ratio and RPO results RecoverPoint/CE failover: Planned failover (Live Migration) Unplanned failover (site disaster recovery)
RecoverPoint Journal Sizing • Journal volume sizing formula • Journal sizing for this solution
RecoverPoint/Cluster Enabler Setup 2 • Setup Hyper-V Cluster on Production site • Configure one consistency group per virtual machine and match names • Finish consistency group initial replication • Set the correct consistency group policy • Use Cluster Enabler to configure the cluster and add nodes from the DR site • Test failover using Live Migration 4
RecoverPoint Compression Ratio • 3x compression ratio on Exchange Mailbox Server and SQL Server virtual machines • 1.5x compression ratio on the SharePoint SQL virtual machines
RecoverPoint RPO in 85 ms latency • Data lag: • 40 MB for MBX • 20 MB for SQL • 10 MB for others • Time lag: <3 sec
Planned Failover • Failover time • SharePointresumed servingclients afterfailing over
Benefits Unplanned Failover • A comprehensive data protection solution for the entire data center • Zero user intervention during site failover • Site failover time • SharePoint farm behavior
Key Findings • Desired performance to meet the needs of the following application configurations: • SharePoint: 35,308 heavy users at 10 percent concurrency • SQL: 60,000 users with more than 4,000 SQL transactions processed and 9,000 IOPS • Exchange: 10,000 concurrent users at 0.10 IOPS profile • Ease of provisioning and simplified management of the whole infrastructure • A comprehensive data protection solution with 100% automatic site failover and good RTO and RPO • 3x compression ratio for most data • 3 second time lag and 18 minute freezing time to client (worst case) during site failover in 85ms network latency
