19th June 2013 ESR Roadshow, HSCIC Improving data for the Healthcare Science workforce Dr.Richard Billings MSC Programme Team
Modernising Scientific Careers • HCS represent about 5% of NHS workforce…… • ….but they influence about 80% of all diagnostic decisions • The total qualified (Band 5+) HCS workforce headcount is around 35,000 • Life Sciences 15,855 (2,073) • Physiological Sciences 6,723 (454) • Physical Sciences & Biomed.Eng. 7,505 (559) • Unclassified HCS 4,998 (16%) • About 26% of the HCS workforce is ill-defined – mainly because of inadequate coding choices available in the NWD and hence ESR • Only 16 of the 40+ scientific specialisms are currently able to be coded satisfactorily in ESR • A project is underway to modify the NWD and hence the ESR to allow coding of the whole HCS workforce – and aim to include informatics in future
