JUNE 30TH 2013 WELCOME FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH SOUTH HAMILTON
Welcome to Worship!“To you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, my Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier, I give myself entirely. May I no longer serve myself, but you all the days of my life.” (John Wesley, 1733) • Hymn • # 57 O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing (verses 1, 2) • 1. O for a thousand tongues to sing my great redeemers praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace! • 2. My gracious master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honors of thy name.
Call to Worship • One: Where the Spirit of the Lord is, • There is the one true church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare • People: • We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, and love, whose mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to his children’s good. • We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of man, the gift of the Father’s unfailing grace, the ground of our hope, and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death. • We believe in the Holy Spirit as the divine presence in our lives, whereby we are kept in perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find strength and help in time of need. • We believe that this faith should manifest itself in the service of love as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord, to the end that the kingdom of God may come upon the earth. Amen
Hymn • # 57 O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing (Verses 3,4) • 3. Jesus! The name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease; tis music in the sinners ears, tis life, and health, and peace. • 4. He breaks the power of canceled sin, he sets the prisoner free; his blood can make the foulest clean; his blood availed for me.
Opening prayer • (Unison) • Lord, may the words we have just spoken be written on our hearts and lived in our daily lives. Amen.
Time with the children • LISTEN • PRAY • SHARE • LOVE
Prayer’s of the people • Pastors Prayer
Our lords prayer • Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. Forever and ever. Amen.
hymn • The Family Prayer • 1. Come and fill our homes with your presence; you alone are worthy of our reverence. • (Chorus) As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. As for me and my house we will serve the Lord. We will serve the Lord. • 2. Lord we vow to live holy, bowing our knees to you only. • (Chorus) As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. As for me and my house we will serve the Lord. We will serve the Lord.
Prayer for illumination • (Unison) • God, pour your love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us, who love the Lord our God with all our hearts, and with all our souls, and with all our minds, and with all our strength.
scripture • Galatians 5: 1, 13-25 • For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. • For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another. • Keep in Step with the Spirit • But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy,[a] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. • If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Sermon • “The Method, The Movement” • “Do all the good you can. By all means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.” • Methodist was never meant to be a religion. • It began as a method for living. • It spread not as a religion but a movement. • Today I am going to share with you “the method and the movement”. • “Now that Jesus has died for our sins, are there any commitments to right living we need to keep?” • Are there any means of grace?
Sermon • Yes, there are ways of Christian living into the grace of God. • Read and study the bible everyday • Pray in private and in the congregation • Take part in the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper regularly • Fast periodically- from food to remember the hungry, from speaking to practice humility, from recreation to remember that our goal is to save souls. • Engage in Works of Piety and Acts of Mercy • The movement began as a small group of people who wanted to live a more holy life.
Sermon • As they lived more holy lives with each other, other people took notice. • Others witnessing the power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the Holy Club wanted to follow their example. • The original Holy Club members started up new groups • The groups grew into classes and societies. • The movement of the method spread as a movement all across Great Britain, even across the Atlantic Ocean to the American Colonies
sermon • The Method and the Movement are the work of God’s Grace in our lives through the presence of the Holy Spirit. • The goal of the Method and the Movement is the salvation of souls for the kingdom of Christ. • If you long to live a more holy life, to deepen you relationship to God, to live in the Holy Spirit: • Read and search the scriptures everyday • Pray privately and with others • Share your longing for spiritual growth with others
Sermon • Invite them to join you and help each other • Personally and as a group confess your sins; forgive each other in the name of God; help each other to change; engage in works of piety and acts if mercy. • As Wesley put it: “Do all the good you can. By all means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.”
Offertory prayer of Thanksgiving • (Unison) • O God, Accept these offerings as tokens of our commitment to be stewards, not proprietors of the resources you have given us, to give in obedience to your word as a sacrifice to you through Jesus Christ in whose name we pray. Amen
hymn • #57 O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing (Verses 5,7) • 5. He speaks, and listening to his voice, new life the dead receive; the mournful, broken hearts rejoice, the humble poor believe. • 7. In Christ, your head, you then shall know, shall feel your sins forgiven; anticipate your heaven below, and own that love is heaven.
