School Aims Promoting Ambition and Social Justice Promoting Social Justice: School Values • It’s everyone’s responsibility to look out for each other • Everyone has the right to freedom and access to a safe learning environment • Every child at Oldmachar has the right to feel safe, and to be able to express themselves and not be judged by others • Everybody in the world is different, so everyone should have the right to be themselves and should not be bullied for their differences.

  9. Upgrade of Progress Indicators In relation to learning planned at a particular level:

  10. Profiling • Last year we developed a senior phase profiling system to replace reports • In response to feedback from staff, students and parents, we are evolving profiling through e-portfolios • This allows reports to be written as before for all year groups

Tracking Progress The information provided will: • Describe students’ progress in particular learning episodes • Describe progress across the curriculum • Build a picture of where we need to intervene and support / challenge students • Be easily understood and communicable to students and parents

  12. Peer Listeners • A trained team of S6 students • Who support your children • And are available at breaks and lunch times • And undertake activities with the S1 students • And support our Respect-Me policy

  18. A Violent World? There are over a dozen conflicts in the world today that cause more than 1000 death per year There are even more that cause less than 1000 deaths per year • “We are probably living in the most peaceful time in the history of our species” • There are fewer murders of humans by humans than at any time in history in the past 10,000 years • The death rate goes down from 65000 deaths per conflict per year in 1950 to 2000 in this decade, as horrific as it is.

  22. John Hunter • “I was creating a lesson for students on Africa. We put all the problems of the world there and I though, let’s let them solve it. I didn’t want to lecture or have just book reading. So I thought, let’s play a game. I’ll make something interactive and it has since evolved… We have ethnic minority tensions, nuclear proliferation, oil spills, environmental disasters, famine, endangered species, global warming – my fourth graders solved global warming in a week.”

Peace Builders • The Peace Direct website reports the following story, “In the turbulent mountain region between Pakistan and Afghanistan, a 23-year-old peacebuilder has founded a network of peace activists – a brave band of young people whose mission is to halt the spread of religious extremism and rescue their peers from recruitment into militant organisations. • Gulalai Ismail started this work aged just 16, after meeting a woman whose son had become a militant. The mother had taken delivery of her boy’s dead body – he was 12.”
