Special Education • According to Marilyn Friend and William D. Bursuck in their book Including Students with Special Needs: A Practical Guide for Classroom Teachers, Special Education is defined as: • A specifically designed instruction provided by the school district or other local education agency that meets the unique needs of students identified as disabled according to federal and state eligibility criteria.

Terms to Be Aware Of… • IEP: Individualized Education Plans • Provided to students who might be eligible for special services specific to each student. • ADHD: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder • Hyperactive Students who struggle with focusing • LRE: Least Restrictive Environment • Students’ right to be educated in a setting with peers without disabilities • Inclusive Practices: • Students with disabilities should be in a general setting classroom as opposed to a special education classroom
