IMU – Goals/Objectives • 1998 - Militant, pan-Islamic organization focused on overthrowing the Uzbek government and replacing with an Islamic theocracy (Islamic State) • 2002 – Expanded goal of Islamic State to include all of Central Asia and Palestine
IMU – History • Early 90’s - Founders and future members fled Uzbekistan after President Kamirov’s crackdown on radical Islamic activities and rivals • Yuldeshev traveled to Pakistan, SA, Iran, Chechnya to study Islamist movements; received funding from ISI and Saudi Intelligence • 1995-1998 – IMU based in Peshawar, Pakistan; traveled to Afghanistan, met Bin Laden and Taliban leadership • 2001 to present – Fought along side Taliban after 9/11 and are currently allied with the BaitullahMehsud, leader of the Pakistani Taliban, and Al-Qaeda in Waziristan and have adopted and AQ theme of restoring the Caliphate

IJU - History • Split with IMU in 2002 • July 30, 2004 – Multiple bombings in Tashkent targeting the Uzbek Prosecutor General’s Office, Israeli Embassy and US Embassy • October 4, 2006 – Rocket attack in Rawalpindi, Pakistan • 2007 Carried out attacks in Afghanistan supported by Taliban and AQ
