Why does the body Age? • Programmed Theories: • Age is a result of genetics. • Biological clock • Hereditary • Cellular Damage Theories: • Cell Malfunction because of damage • From internal body changes • External trauma • Maybe Free Radicals – unstable molecules • Cross Linking – proteins in cells bind together to toughen tissue = breakdown

  4. What are other non-physical changes • Cognitive Changes: • Dementia – loss of cognitive functions • Memory decline • Social Changes: • Retirement • Grandparents • Living independently or not?

  5. Success!!!!!!!!!! • Success: • Ego Integrity – the belief that life is meaningful and worthwhile even while your physical abilities deteriorate. • Life Satisfaction • Deciding what is important • Finding a new challenge.
