The RID project Riverine inputs and direct discharges to Norwegian coastal waters • - Daily values of freshwater run-off and associated nutrient content • 10 of the largest rivers and 36 smaller rivers • covers ~ 50 % of the total catchment area Arild Sundfjord 14/15 Mai 2008
The RID project Co-operation project between NIVA, NVE and Bioforsk Water flux data (daily) from NVE – measured from rivers, modelled for other runoff Nutrients and other constituents from NIVA - at least monthly measurements for main rivers, four times/year for smaller) Arild Sundfjord 14/15 Mai 2008

The RID project Parameters: pH Conductivity Suspended particulate matter Total Organic Carbon Total phosphorus Orthophosphate Total nitrogen Nitrate Ammonium (NH4) Silicate (SiO2) Lead (Pb) Cadmium (Cd) Copper (Cu) Zinc (Zn) Arsenic (As) Chromium (Cr) Nickel (Ni) Mercury (Hg) Lindane + various PCBs Arild Sundfjord 14/15 Mai 2008
The RID project – AquaMonitor web pages Data are processed and quality checked, then uploaded to password protected web site Financed by SFT, for OSPAR commitment Data until 2006 are available free of charge Arild Sundfjord 14/15 Mai 2008
The TEOTIL project Theoretical, coefficient based calculation of runoff and associated nutrient loads based on known source distribution. Covers entire Norwegian mainland – can be used to ”fill” the missing 50% of the area in RID. Arild Sundfjord 14/15 Mai 2008

Summary - and questions - Discharges and nutrient loads are provided at 1 day resolution. Is this sufficient for operational modelling? Of hydrodynamics? Biology, e.g. algal blooms or oxygen deficiencies? Should other parameters be included? Is temporal and spatial resolution adequate? Reference Skarbøvik et al., 2007.
