South Carolina’s Gates Foundation Public Access Hardware Upgrade Grant (PAC HUG)
Background • States in Round 1 and Round 2 of original Gates Library Foundation grant • Replacement of Windows NT computers and servers • Libraries in service areas of less than 300,000 • Service areas above 300,000 handled under separate grant (Greenville, Richland, Charleston)
Basic Grant Guidelines • 3 priorities • The State Library will write the grant • Libraries required to complete technology survey and technology inventory using TechAtlas • The State Library will provide consultants to assist in the inventory process
What’s Covered • New public access computers • No specific model required • “Public access computers” defined as computers provided for public use, offer Internet access, and productivity software (like Word, Excel, etc.) • Approx. $1000 multiplied by the number of originally granted computers
Priority 1 • Libraries granted computers under original GLF grant, 1999-2000 • Original computers and/or servers still connected to network/Internet and have not been upgraded • Does not cover additional computers purchased • Must be replaced by December 2006 • Required to do a second inventory in late ‘06
Priority 2 • Libraries granted computers under original GLF grant program in 1999-2000 • Original computers have been replaced or upgraded • Will receive funding in either 2007-2008
Priority 3 • Libraries not granted computers under original grant program • Includes libraries that were ineligible • Includes new branches (new service point since 2000)
Requirements for Eligibility • Use TechAtlas to complete brief technology survey • Use TechAtlas to complete a technology inventory
What is TechAtlas • Suite of planning tools • Created by Npower with a grant from Gates Foundation • New “E-rate” friendly version due out in December
TechAtlas Inventory • Minimum required: • Inventory of all public access machines • Include network/computer name (ex. workstation 1 or Gates1) and the operating system • Must complete inventory for each eligible branch locations
TechAtlas Inventory • More complete inventory can be used for technology planning and E-rate later • TechAtlas can store this information • Can use 3 different inventory tools
Inventory Tools—Manual Tool • Form based • Can be completed from any computer with access to the Internet • Manual data entry • Requires that you already have an inventory completed or the information available in some form
Inventory Tools—Network Tool • Works only on a Windows domain network with a server running Windows 2000 or 2003 • Will run on Windows NT server, but requires additional download • Microsoft WMI—Available in your TechAtlas account
Inventory Tools—Network Tool • Can run from any computer connected to the network, but you must be logged on as the domain administrator • Will only inventory computers logged on to the network • Will not inventory standalone WindowsNT machines (including most original Gates machines)
Inventory Tools—Local Tool • Provides the most complete data • Requires administrative access • Must run on individual computers • Can copy the profile from one inventoried computer for similar machines • An additional download needed to inventory 95/98/NT computers—(Microsoft WMI)
Deadline Inventories must be completed by December 16, 2005
