STEM GEOGRAPHY SUMMATIVE

In this STEM geography summative project, students will work together to create a sustainable feature using "green" technologies. The challenge is to build a living wall, a vertical self-sufficient garden, within Georges Vanier school. Students will learn about the components of a living wall and practice shop safety while using tools. The project encourages creativity and environmental consciousness, promoting the values of social and environmental justice.

  5. BUT FIRST……… SHOP SAFETY • We will be working in Rm. 131 and 133 for the rest of the semester • This is someone else’s home, KEEP IT CLEAN and be respectful of the rules within that space! • In order to build your living wall, you will be required to use a variety of tools • Basic keys to refraining from injury: • 1. Tools have no feelings, therefore they DO NOT care if they hurt you • 2. Do NOT run or horseplay in the shop area • 3. You must ALWAYS have a set of safety glasses when you’re in the shop • 4. You must wear closed toe shoes, NO sandals or flip flops • If this occurs, you will not be in the shop area for that work period

  12. What if the Vise is not available to help cut? • You may get another person to hold the piece of pipe on a flat surface (shop table) • PLEASE make sure that you are holding the pipe at least an arms length away

  13. FINAL THOUGHTS AND DIRECTION • From this point forward we will be meeting in either Rm. 131 or 133 on a daily basis • You must do the following before physically starting your project • Complete the online shop safety test on Google Forms • Complete the drawings and planning stages of your Living Wall (package) • You will have 2 to 3 weeks to complete your living wall and we will be selecting the best 2 to 3 to place in the school • Be sure to keep the following in mind • Your living wall must be secured to a frame of your choice • Your living wall must have a flow of water through all of your plants in order for it to work • HAVE FUN AND BE CREATIVE
