  2. Today’s Objectives • Define Psychology • Identify the fields of Psychology • Understand Psychology as a science

  3. What is Psychology? • Psychology is the science of behavior and mental processes • Ps seek to explain why and how we learn, communicate, perceive etc… • Ps attempt to acquire measurable data to prove their hypothesis in their field of study

  4. The 7 Major Fields of Psychology • Developmental Psych- study growth from conception to death. Focus on how personality and behavior emerge and change, etc

  5. Physiological Psych- study biological basis for behavior, thoughts and emotions. Focus on chemical changes, brain function and drug use

  6. Experimental Psych- research basic processes: learning, memory, sensation, perception, cognition, motivation, emotion

  7. Personality Psych- study differences in traits (anxiety, sociability, self-esteem, aggression, etc)

  8. Clinical Psych- See patients to diagnose, find cause and treat their disorders

  9. Social Psych- Study how people influence each other (conformity and deviance, obedience to authority, persuasion, etc)

  10. Industrial/Organizational Psych- try to improve businesses by improving selection of employees, productivity, and training

  11. Psychology as a Science • Ps use the scientific method in seeking answers to their ?s • As the subject of scientific testing is human, different rules apply than to the “hard sciences” • Surveys, observation, and chimp studies help Ps to learn w/o violating human ethics
