A Lunch and Learn is usually a training or presentation sessionfacilitated to employees during lunch time. It tends to be accessible and informal lunch is provided by the company or organization.
What I think a successful L & L must have and should be about in our schools
1. reinforce previous training and to build commitment in the teaching/learning community Example: Takeaways from experiences with a strategy or app2. No longer than 30-45 minutes3. outside resources and school leaders. I would prefer an insider
4. Think beyond pizza or sandwiches. 5. Survey the needs of the teachers prior to the event to make it relevant for most participants. For example, if training was provided about Google Docs as a collaboration tool, prior to the L & L, survey what has been the most common experiences, what has been the most common used of it, or what has been the most common reactions in feedback from the students, etc.
6. Make available a feedback form at the end and create a follow up digital venue where to keep contributing and have easy access of all of it.7. Schedule a brief Q&A session.
For my presentation I had to think of the following three scenarios:
I am suggesting a L & L on follow up activities from previous training in how to use Google Docs to implement technology into a collaboration assignment using Google Classroom.
Teacher Collaboration The prior activities in Google Docs could be completed in a one computer classroom if the computer is used as a workstation. Every student in a group can have different tasks.
Snack and Lunch for students This type of event could be thought as a way of refreshing the routines in the classroom, as well. Having the students officially allowed to eat, which does not happen in my classroom, while still learning, can make a huge difference, mostly for those teaching blocks of 90 minutes like me.
