  5. Why would Pope Clement VII reject Henry VIII?

Catherine of Aragon was Charles V’s Aunt. • Charles V (grandson of Ferdinand and Isabella) was Holy Roman Emperor (Hapsburg Family) • Pope Clement VII was controlled by HRE…which means the emperor who was also the nephew of Catherine of Aragon!!! The “Broken” wife of Henry VIII of England! Because there is always Drama

  7. Henry VIII wants a son. • Thomas Cranmer, wants a religious reformation • Thomas Cromwell sees it as a political opportunity (Think new monarchy) • Act of Supremacy (1534): made Henry VIII king of England AND head of Anglican Church. English Reformation in a nutshell

Most people in England don’t know what is going on… • Nobles are aware and pissed…so Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell give them land • (then they are ok with it) • Henry VIII dies, Edward VI ushers in a new radical reformation (because he is just a weak kid). • He dies, Mary I wanted to restore Catholicism to England • Ironically, her persecution of Protestants leads to a growing protestant presence in England.
