  2. Henry VIII-Who was he? • He was fluent in English, Latin, French, and Spanish. • He was athletic: good at jousting, tennis, hunting. • poet and composer. • Overall, an interesting guy, and jack of all trades. Henry at 18

  3. King Henry VIII of England (1509- 1547) • The Pope gave Henry the title: “Defender of the Faith” • However, complications soon led henry to make England a protestant nation. • Why did this happen?

  4. What happened? • Henry needed a male heir. Unfortunately his wife, Catherine of Aragon, bore him only one daughter. • When Catherine turned 42, Henry decided Catherine could not give him A son, so he jetted • Catherine had been married to Henry’s brother Arthur. Henry quoted the bible to explain gods punishment ‘If a man takes his brother's wife, they will die childless’ (Leviticus 20:21)

  5. Pleeease…? • The Catholic Church didn’t permit divorce, but it would grant annulments, which essentially say the marriage wasn’t legal to begin with. • BUT, when Henry’s request reached the Pope, Rome happened to be surrounded by the troops of Emperor Charles V (Catherine’s Uncle) who, for obvious reasons, wasn’t keen to see the marriage dissolved. • After much stalling, the Pope refused. Henry was not pleased.

  6. So what does Henry do? • He calls Parliament and in 1534 and passes the **Act of Supremacy**, which makes the English king the head of the Church in England, not the pope. • Pope excommunicated him • *** Henry the 8th was no supporter of Luther ***

  8. Anne Boleyn • Married 1533 • One of Catherine’s servants. • In 1536, she’s accused of adultery and treason. Henry locks her up and has her executed. • Her sister was a mistress of Henry’s. • Henry was nice and got a skilled swordsman to behead her.

  9. Jane Seymour • Henry married her 11 days after Anne’s execution. • She was one of Anne’s servants. • Finally bears a male heir. • Dies almost two weeks after the birth.

  10. Anne of Cleaves • Married in 1540 • Was a political marriage for Henry. • Once the political advantage was gone, Henry has the marriage annulled. • She fares pretty well.

  11. Catherine Howard • Married 1540. • Henry found out she had affairs before getting married and may have committed adultery. • Got Parliament to pass a law declaring it treason for an unchaste woman to marry the king. • She’s beheaded two days later in 1542.

  12. Catherine Parr Henry’s final wife. She had two marriages prior to Henry, in which she gave birth to 0 children During her marriage with Henry, she gave birth to no children She outlasted Henry who died 28 January 1547
