I was born Deaf. I am the only Deaf in the family. I learned to paint when I was 6 years old.
Today I live in Colorado, USA. We are here in Edmonton. I used to live in Washington State. I used to live in Upstate New York. I live in Colorado. I was born in California.
Then I began to paint Deaf Art. My paintings are about Deaf experience.
That is called “Deaf View Image Art.” A short name for De’VIA.
De’VIA History • De’VIAwas first established in 1989, • by nine Deaf Artists. Almost 25 years ago.
How I seeDe’VIA Work • De’VIA work is about Deaf experience. • Symbols are in artwork. • Three themes are in De’VIA artwork: 1 happy and proud 2unhappy or sad 3both happy and sad
Symbols in My Paintings • Painter’s blue tape- crossed-out. BEFORE Blue Tape AFTER Blue Tape EXCEPT HEAR
Symbols in My Paintings • Hand-Deaf people, Deaf pride, Deaf culture, sign language. • Eye- Deaf people can see.
Symbols in My Paintings • Red/blue eyebrows-my trademark, my style.
Why Do I Paint Red Yellow andBlue? • Because these colors are bright and • powerful. • I want people to remember my colors.
You will learn how to paint with red, • yellow and blue. • And you can paint with black and white. • I want you to decide what you want to • paint. • The painting is about Deaf Experience.
You begin with sketch. • I want you to think about the three • themes that we talked about, and the • symbols. • -Self Portrait about you as a Deaf person. • -Deaf History that you are proud of. • -Your Language with Hands and Eyes.
