Other Electrical • KOP = Kit Of Parts. KOP is delivered to each team by mail or at kickoff • Electrical motor (CIM, Fisher-Price, etc) • Wiring considerations • Routing
Wiring considerations • What size wire will you use? Google AWG • What color? Read Section 8-The Robot Rule <R48> and others • Where is it going from and to? How will I get it there? Will it pass a vulnerable area? How will I protect it? • Modular design? It almost always pays off so what is it?
Routing • Routing is the art of cleanly and simply securing wires, hoses, chains and keeping them out of harm’s way. • Routing considers what else needs to be in the same area and protects the items • Routing considers the priority; Will the robot run SAFELY if this wire/air line is cut? • Often happens last! • Routing takes into account the need for changes during competition and allows for easy access
Modular Design • Has modules that can be removed from the robot easily • Usually has connectors so it is plug and play • Allows for off robot build and test • cRIO’s are expensive! • Buy extra connectors: cRIO power, module power
Design • Use lessons from past experience –Lessons learned document? • Develop a plan • Review the plan with experienced person • Document the plan and communicate with other groups like software and chassis to make sure they have the information they need. Include drawings! • Update the plan as changes occur. Communicate with other groups as to what changed and how it affects them.

Electrical Definitions • Voltage (V-Volts) – The energy-transfer capability of a flow of electric charge (potential difference). • Current (I-Amps) – The net rate of flow of positive charges. • Resistance (R-ohms) – The characteristic of the conductor to carry current defined by Ohms law. • Battery – Stored chemical energy. • Electrical Circuit – Closed loop which current flows. • Wire – Insulated conductor to connect electrical components
Current Flow & EHS FIRST Wire Color Code • Current flows from the highest potential to the lowest potential thru a conductive element. • Red Wire = Positive (Power) • Black Wire = Negative (Ground) • White = Control Circuit
Ohm’s Law • Ohm’s law in honor of Georg Ohm, the German physicist, whose original experiments led to the simple relationship between voltage, current and resistance. • V = R * I
Formulas • OHMS LAW - V = I * R or R = V/I • Kirchoff’s Voltage Law (KVL): • Sum of voltages around closed loop = 0 • Kirchoff’s Current Law (KCL): • Sum of currents entering node = 0 • Resistance in series – R(total) =R1+R2 • Resistance in parallel – R(total)=R1*R2/(R1+R2) • Power – P=V*I • Voltage Divider – V(out)=V(in)*R2/(R1+R2)
Build • WEAR safety glasses • Assembly the robot using correct techniques • This will ensure the robot will work during competition.
Build 2 • Things to watch for:+ mis-wiring-ground into power or signal into power or ground+incorrect voltage for the device+ pinched wires+ powering up before everything is ready+ wires rubbing against sharp edges+ ground wire connected to power+ ANY safety hazard
Test/Troubleshooting • Organize your documentation & Read it! • Be cautious-know what voltage is required • CHECK is that voltage being supplied before connecting it to the device • Swap out parts to see if it is just a bad part • Experience is a great teacher-write down your lessons learned
