Meanings of Coherence • A coherent presentation of mathematical content • A coherent “worldview” of the mathematics • A coherent set of goals for students
A Coherent Approach to Curriculum Coherence • These types of coherence all build upon one another.
Coherent Goals for Students • Preparation for future success, including: • Further study in mathematics • The workplace • As citizens • Helping students “keep their options open”
Coherent Mathematical “Worldview” • Reasoning and sense making should be the basis for the secondary mathematics curriculum. • This is the means to ensure long-term student success.
Coherent Content • “Emphasizing the underlying connections that promote reasoning and sense making introduces coherence that allows streamlining of the curriculum. As attention turns to how those underlying connections build across the high school years, less time needs to be spent addressing lists of particular skills that need to be mastered.” (NCTM, 2009, p. 17) • Moreover, students may need to be exposed to different content from current norms.
