Context – How does IOWA compare? A new reality is beginning to sweep across Iowa and the nation. There’s a growing understanding that big changes are going to be needed in education for Iowa students to be successful learners, earners and citizens in the 21st century. “It’s not just the rest of the nation that Iowa’s kids have to compete with now. It’s the rest of the world,”said Iowa’s incoming director of education, Jason Glass..” SAI Report, February 2011, p. 1

The Challenges …What? The Math Common Core includes: • Some content at different grade levels • Some mathematical language that may be new or unfamiliar to teachers • Mastery vs. Spiral • Significant advancement of some topics to earlier grades. • Content not repeated • Tracking eliminated except acceleration • Success the first time • Students expected to advance in mathematics • Teachers will need opportunities to study, discuss, and plan for the changes included in the Core. • Students will need support during transition
The Challenges…So What? • Do most 7th graders have the pre-requisite knowledge and skills required to successfully master the new 8th math standards (formerly Algebra I content)? • Do most 8th graders have the pre-requisite knowledge and skills required to successfully master the new 9th grade math standards? • Are most teachers familiar with and/or ready to teach the new 7th, 8th, and 9th grade math standards successfully to all students?
The Challenges…So What? Since the answers to these questions are NO then a transition plan needs to be developed to bridge the skill and knowledge gap to more readily ensure student and teacher success.

Option 1 Cognitive Tutor • Information Sheets • Applications Due April 30 • Initial Training July 18-21, 2011, Nov. 7-8, 2011 and April 25, 2012 • Student assessment review meetings quarterly • Coaching support throughout the year
Currently, AEA9 districts utilizing Cognitive Tutor implement with great variance. Recommendations by Carnegie Learning: • 50 hours of computer time (practice) • Mixed ability classrooms • Collaborative learning emphasis
E2T2 Support of Cognitive Tutor for 2011-12 School Year • Implement both classroom and software components with fidelity Dates for training • July 18-21, 2011 • Nov. 7-8, 2011 • April 25, 2012 • Coaching and Quarterly Data Meetings
Dates 7th Grade Teachers expected to attend: • June 27-30, 2011 • July 11- 14, 2011 • Oct. 17-18, 2011 • April 9-10, 2012 Coaching support throughout the year Option of additional transition topic workshops
What Will It Look Like • Scope and Sequence • Unpack the Standards – write learning targets • Identify Gaps • Create Transition Lessons • Utilize Practice Standards • Teaching through Inquiry and CRA model • Reaching struggling learners • Assessment

Now What • Option 1: Cognitive Tutor Applications are due April 30, 2011 • Option 2: Design Units form due April 30, 2011 • Option 3: No support from MBAEA.
