Planet or Not?? • Pluto is actually not a planet but a dwarf planet. • Pluto is a shadowy disk-like zone beyond the orbit of Neptune populated by a trillion or more comets. • Pluto was discovered as a dwarf planet in 2006.
Pluto’s Moons Charon Nix and Hydra Much smaller Discovered in 2005 Seen from the Hubble telescope 50-60 kilometers in diameter • Half the size of Pluto • Almost considered Pluto and Charon to be double planets because of the sizes
Is Pluto Terrestrial or Jovian? • Pluto is a rocky dwarf planet which makes it neither Terrestrial or Jovian.
Basic Properties/ Statistics • Tilt: 123 degrees, turns counter-clockwise • Length of year: 248 days • Mass: 12.5x10^21 kilograms (.0021x Earth’s mass) 1/500ths of earth • Length from sun: • Maximum: 4.583 billion miles • Minimum: 2.757 billion miles
More Properties • Temperatures: (Celsius) -Day: -142 -Night: -221 *Each day on Pluto takes 6.39 Earth days* Pluto's density is 2.03 g/cm3 Earth’s density is 5.52 g/cm3
l Structure & Composition/ Surface Features • Very icy and rocky • Dirty yellow color, With darker and brighter colors across the surface, with cluster of dark spots. • Pluto is basically a huge ball of rocky ice because the sun is so far away.
Atmosphere • Made up mainly of nitrogen • Has carbon monoxide and methane as well • Its atmosphere is affected by the temperature
Rings • 2 small moons may cause debris that could form into planetary rings. • It is very unlikely that it can hold the rings because of its mass
Who Discovered it? • The existence of Pluto was predicted by perturbations of the orbit of Neptune late in the 19th century • Clyde W. Tombaugh at Lowell Observatory in Arizona. • He did a very careful sky survey which identified Pluto in photos taken on February 18, 1930 and announced it on March 13, 1930 • It was American astronomer Percival Lowell who first thought there might be another planet somewhere near Neptune and Uranus. He never found it. Thug Life
Fly By • Pluto fast flyby • Was supposed to be Launched in 2000 and reached Pluto by 2010. • Did not make it. • Voyager 2 • It was successful. • These are pictures from voyager 2.
Kuiper Belt • Belt is 50 AU’s from the sun • Similar to the asteroid belt but 200 times massive • Mainly small bodies
