ENGR 493 – Baobab Team • Background Information • Research & Development • Prototype Construction • Leadership
Baobab Tree • Adansoniadigitata • Grows in Central & South Africa, Madagascar • Called dead-rat tree, upside down tree • Extremely drought resistant
Baobab Fruit • More Vitamin C than oranges • More calcium than cow’s milk • Up to 10 inches in length • Every part but hard shell has use/purpose
Potential • Many uses • Increase exportation to EU • Generate income • Additional food source BUT . . .
Early Testing • Weight inside was can of beef gravy • Basic principle testing • Overall success • Revealed need for abrasive or frictional force • Other prototypes created and tested
Two Parts Outer Housing Inner Tumbler
Understanding Self and Others • Both Matt and Ed have Keirsey Guardian Temperaments • This worked made our group well together • It allowed us to rely on each other to make sure we got our work completed.
Utilizing Our Strengths and Technical Leadership • Only having 2 members of the group made us fast and efficient. • We each had certain skills and resources we could pull from. • Ed – access and skills working with wood working • Matt – Used a PSU machine shop to do the metal working we could not do ourselves • Easy to separate work as we worked through the project • Great TA for project
Judgment • Many hard choices during our experience • English or Metric? • What parts to buy? • What design parameters were more important?
Leading Change • We worked to design this machine to help other people • We are leading the way to help produce a sustainable resource for Africa. • We used our resources to and technical skills to help bring change half way across the globe
Future Innovations • After we completed our step in this larger project, we realized that we need to help lead the next group of students. • Completed a list of things to improve the machine, while allowing there creativity to shop through. • We felt this was an important last step to take.
Improvements • Abrasive force needed • Lighter and smaller • Less cost • Method of Sorting product
Special Thanks • Dr. Lisa Steinberg • Dr. Rick Schuhmann • Ryan Whittington • Flora Chadare (Contact in Benin, Africa) • MATSE Machine Shop Staff
