Investigating Photosynthesis Jan van Helmont was a Belgian physician in the 1600’s Conducted experiments to find out how plants grow He put a small seedling in a pot of soil, watered it for five years. He found out the tree then weighed about 75 kg, but the soil was the same mass as before His concluded most of the increase in mass of the tree came from the water (he didn’t know about carbon)
