Horror • In many horror films the drama will often begin with the main character investigating something further such as a noise which often leads to a discovery and starts the storyline. • One of the main conventions in horror films is that they often feature common fears such as nightmares, death and fear of the unknown. • There is a sub genre in horror films which are usually included in the storyline such as monsters, vampires sci-fi and religion. • Other conventions include; low key lighting, flashbacks, quick flashing shots, pathetic fallacy and secluded locations.

Comedy Conventions • Comedies are light – hearted dramas, crafted to amuse provoke and entertain. • Exaggerates the situation • Comedies oversee the frustrations of life and provide a momentary escape from day to day life. • Setting usually suburban i.e. high school or bar – happy, sunny towns or neighborhoods • Common themes – good against bad, violence, friendship and conflict • Comedies often feature more than one protagonist as a comedy films often feature multiple main characters that go through the story almost as one person.

Action • Clearly defined hero, villain and victim. • Speech praising villain • Hero's objective is to stop the villain and save the victim. • Power divide between hero and villain is large. • Good vs bad • Nerve racking music • Weapons such as guns • Explosions e.g. crashes • Setting in a big city – modern • Always a motive
