Companies & CSR • Three kinds of Indian companies when it comes to corporate responsibility: • Big Indian multinational corporations that have proper corporate responsibility mechanisms in place; • Large national companies that appreciate the value of corporate responsibility but have no inherent structures to show for it; and • The many small and medium-sized enterprises that are doing only piecemeal work at best
Definition • The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum defines CSR on basis of four issues: • Corporate governance to include reputation, transparency, accountability, and anti corruption; • Safety and environment which comprises product/service safety, worker health and safety, local environment quality ; • Access/development that includes initiatives in education, health-HIV/AIDS, digital divide, enterprise development, and; • Human Rights that includes labour standards, security and indigenous people.
Why CSR? • Because of visibility • Feel good factor( retention of talent) • Business partner requirements • Voluntary • Pressure from stakeholders • Need to maintain good relationship with external entities • Founders attitudes • Pressure from investors, lenders and insurers • Threat of regulatory action or emerging legislation • Risk to company brand or reputation (and hence shareholder value) as a result of consumer pressure or NGO campaigns

Ltd. – controlling attrition with CSR initiative

SAIL • Health & Medical • 20 state-of-the-art hospitals with 4500 beds managed by around 6000 doctors • launched an AIDS Awareness and Control Program in partnership with NACO, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare • Education • opened about 200 schools in the Steel Townships and imparts education to over 1,00,000 children • Employs more than 6000 teachers • Bhilai Steel Plant has adopted 36 tribal children of Chattisgarh region • Sports and Cultural activities • established academies for handball, hockey and football at Bhilai, Rourkela and Bokaro respectively • encouraged about 30 SAIL family children to either win national medals or be selected to the national teams
SAIL • Assistance During Natural Calamities • relief material worth Rs. 1 crorewas channelized in the 1999 cyclone flood in Orissa • have given support in the severe earthquake in Jabalpur on May 21,1997 and in Gujarat on January 26,2001 • Women Upliftment • in all SAIL Plants, MahilaSamities have been formed since inception • various activities performed are women empowerment and development, vocational training, education for needy girl children • Support to Organizations • providing assistance to organizations working for the children of prisoners, physically challenged persons, mentally handicapped children
SAIL • SAIL Model Villages • SAIL has adopted 79 villages across the country for undertaking comprehensive development as SAIL Model Villages • initiatives are being taken with respect to Medical & Healthcare Services, Education, Sanitation, Roads, Employment Generation • Ancillary Development • since 1978, 1861 units have been recognized by the company as ancillary units. On an average the company has been adding 42 units annually • creates employment for more than 700 people each year • supports these industries by providing land, supply of potable water, and other infrastructure facilities • Roads • involved in the construction and repair of 33 kmsof puccaroads per year • Provides access to nearly 2 lakh people across 435 villages to modern infrastructure facilities every year
Initiatives by Infosys Foundation - Environment Infosys' vision is to become "carbon and water neutral". • Water Management • Harvest rainwater and consistently reduce the use of fresh water • Recycle waste water to be reused for primary and secondary purposes • Energy Conservation • Measure our utilization of energy through energy audits • Data collected is used to achieve increasing levels of energy conservation • Waste Management • Waste is recycled scientifically. • Waste is reduced, segregate it at the source and is disposed at dedicated waste segregation and processing plants at each development center
Initiatives by Infosys Foundation - Healthcare • Hospital wards • Donates advanced equipment • Organized health camps and distributes medicines • Constructed Super-specialty Hospital at the Sassoon hospital, Pune • Donated ambulances and high-tech surgical equipment to medical centers and hospitals in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Orissa
