An optical tweezer uses a focused laser beam to provide an attractive or repulsive force depending on the refractive index to physically hold and move microscopic dielectric objects. • It is capable of manipulating nanometer and micrometer-sized dielectric particles by exerting extremely small forces . The laser contains a very strong electric field gradient. It turns out that dielectric particles are attracted along the gradient to the region of strongest electric field, which is the center of the beam. • They are often used to manipulate and study single molecules by interacting with a bead that has been attached to that molecule. DNA and the proteins and enzymes that interact with it are commonly studied in this way.
MILITARY APPLICATION • SCI-FI TURNED REALITY
The US Air Force airborne laser, (ABL), designated YAL-1A, is a high-energy laser weapon system for the destruction of tactical theatre ballistic missiles, which is carried on a modified Boeing 747-400F freighter aircraft Aircraft Boeing 747-400F Engines 4 x GE engines, type CF6-80C2BSF Laser Type Megawatt Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL) Laser Wavelength 1.315 microns
The laser weapon uses three laser beam systems: the powerful killing laser beam or primary beam, a set of illuminating laser beams and a beacon laser. • The primary laser beam is generated by a megawatt chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) located at the rear of the fuselage, which lases at 1.315 micron wavelength. • A low-power, multiple beam, track illuminating laser (TILL), is used to determine the target's range and provides initial information on the atmosphere through which the beam is being transmitted. • The beacon illuminating laser (BILL) . The kilowatt class BILL reflects light from the target to provide data on the rapidly changing characteristics of the atmosphere along the path of the laser beam.
Treatment with low-level laser helps to promote the release of endorphins in the body. • Omega uses a low powered (soft) laser to treat nicotine addiction. The laser is no more powerful than a 60-watt light bulb. • Energy points related to addiction are identified and treated with a combination of a helium neon laser and electrobiostimulation. • The entire procedure is external, non-invasive, and non-thermal. • Laser Therapy is painless. During the laser treatment energy points on your hands, face, and ears are treated. • The low-level laser acts as a tool to assist the client through the initial physical withdrawals from nicotine
