Legislative Update: NCLB • No Child Left Behind • Not likely any time soon • Administration is using ARRA as a means to promote their education policies • Congress is suggesting maybe 2010 to begin discussions • Concern by “blue dogs” of moving forward with a reauthorization is an election year • Topics being discussed: • Common standards • High school
Legislative Update: WIA • Reauthorization pending since 2003. • No legislation has been introduced but is a priority for both the Administration and Congress. • The Senate holding a series of “listening sessions;” will hold a hearing on May 19th. • The House began a series of hearings in February. • Will WIA be revamped or tweaked?
Legislative Update: GREEN • Grants for Renewable Energy Education for the Nation (GREEN) Act – H.R. 1775 • Introduced by Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-CA) • The GREEN Act would help to create a workforce prepared for the green economy through competitive grants to develop CTE programs in renewable energy fields.
Legislative Update: GREEN • Competitive grants • awarded to secondary, postsecondary and community partnerships that develop programs of study focused on careers in the renewable energy sector. • awarded to secondary and postsecondary CTE facilities that are energy efficient and promote the use of renewable energy practices.
Legislative Update • Fast Track to College Act • Congressman Dale Kildee (D-MI) and Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) introduced the Fast Track to College Act last month. • Goal: Increasing high school graduation rates and the percentage of students who complete an industry recognized credential • Grants that support and establish early college high school and dual enrollment programs.
