  14. Now draw a picture of each character (Katerina and Bianca) and surround each with the quotations you have found Now surround your pictures with quotations

  15. Plenary The story so far • Sly is taken from his usual surroundings, treated as royalty and shown the play ‘The Taming of the Shrew.’ • Baptista tells Hortensio and Gremio that he will not let Bianca marry until someone has married Katerina • Petruchio decides to marry Katerina for the money – she is not happy about it

  16. Lesson Five Learning Objective: To understand the social conventions of Elizabethan England

  17. What is a convention? Copy into books: Social conventions are ‘rules’ that we follow in our every day lives but that are not necessarily written down but we all know.

  18. Can you think of any others?

  19. Elizabethan Women • In Shakespeare’s times – the treatment of women was very different to today • All women were viewed as second class citizens. • Women were viewed as property owned by their fathers

  20. Arranged Marriages • It was the custom in Elizabethan England for marriages to be arranged by a girl’s father; she would have little or no choice over whom she would marry • Kate is headstrong but still has to marry who her father says she will; in this case, Petruchio

  21. Dowry • The dowry offered by a bride’s father was a combination of property, wealth and land that would be offered with the woman as part of the package • What modern custom remains in marriage from Elizabethan times? • Answer: Father giving away daughter

  22. Dowry continued… • The dowry offered would depend upon how attractive the woman was • Pictures were drawn of the potential brides and sent out to ‘suitors’ who would then express an interest in marrying the daughter; at this point they would be in a bidding war similar to buying a house if the daughter was very desirable

  23. Bianca Bianca is a typical Elizabethan woman, she: • Looks after her appearance; • Does as she is told by her father; • Shows an interest in the arts • Has traditionally good looks; a high forehead, fair hair, is softly spoken

  24. Katherina • Katherina is head-strong • She is violent • She has darker hair • She does not do as she is told by her father • She attacks servants and her sister Who do you think would have the better dowry – Bianca or Katherina? Why?

  25. Plenary Produce a short piece of writing in your exercise books that addresses: • How women were treated in Elizabethan England; • How women were expected to behave; • What a dowry is.

  26. Homework Design and make a poster that advertises either Bianca or Katerina as a wife. You should include a picture of the woman (you can get it from the internet if you like) and information about her. This is her dowry

  27. Lesson 6:To relate our understanding of social conventions to ‘The taming of the shrew’

  28. Starter: answer these questions • At a wedding, who do we expect to be late? • How do you expect the bride and groom to look? • How do you expect them to behave?

  29. Describe Petruchio’s actions and whether they surprise you.

  30. Finish the sentence • To explain today’s lesson to someone who was absent I would say…

  31. L.O: To learn how to use persuasive devices to explore Katerina’s reaction to starvation

  32. Read: • Page 35-36 • Katerina and Grumio Answer: • Why is Petruchio starving her? • Has her character changed at all since the start of the play?

  33. Task Imagine you are Katerina, write a speech persuading Petruchio to let you eat. HOW TO SUCCEED….

  34. Remember to use A.F.O.R.E.S.T

  35. Remind yourself… A Alliteration F Facts O Opinions R Repetition and Rhetorical Questions E Exaggeration and Emotions S Statistics and a strong ending T The Rule of Three

  36. This piece will be assessed so do your best! Remember: • All the work we have done on using capital letters correctly. • Use paragraphs • Use a thesaurus to find good synonyms. • Use punctuation. • Use connectives. • Include at least 4 of the AFOREST techniques.

  37. To improve my own work through the peer marking process

  38. Check Spelling: If you’re not sure get a dictionary Paragraphs: have they used them? Punctuation: have they used it? Capital letters: In the correct places? AFOREST: At least four of the techniques?

  39. L.O.To explore the relationship between Katherina and Petruchio

  40. Taming the Shrew Petruchio has devised many schemes that appear to torture Kate until she does as she is told. This final one is the most bizarre of them all. Whilst on a journey, Petruchio stops and asks Katherina to look at the sun – or is it the moon? Read Script – Paper Resource

  41. Plot development • This is a major turning point in the play. • Up until this point, Katerina has always resisted Petruchio’s bizarre claims – but now she appears to be truly tamed – she is completely at Petruchio’s command

  42. Drama • In pairs, you will perform the script. If you are pair A: Katerina must act as if she is truly obeying Petruchio If you are pair B: Katerina must act as if she is laughing at him

  43. Plenary • There is no right or wrong answer to this question: Why do YOU think she has agreed with everything Petruchio has said?

  44. To analyse Katerina’s final speech Starter • Sum up the story in two sentences

  45. Read Katerina’s final speech Find and write down 1. All the different names Katerina calls Petruchio. 2. What do you think these words mean? 3. What does this tell us about how she has started to see Petruchio? 4. What are the things that Katerina says husbands do for their wives?

  46. Continued… 5. What does Katerina now think the role or duty of a wife? 6. What does Katerina say she will do with her hand? What do you think this means?

  47. Last lesson • Most of you decided she was just ‘acting’ to get her own way. Have you changed your mind? Write a paragraph explaining your answer. has the shrew been tamed?
