Contents • GHG emissions - standards • Some recent developments and implications • PAS2050 review - an opportunity?
GHG Emissions - standards • Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are typically: • carried out using Lifecycle Analysis (LCA) techniques • quantified in terms of a “Co2 equivalent” emissions metric • A carbon footprint study is a partial LCA where single environmental impact category is focused on greenhouse gas emissions • LCA studies in food, and seafood, an emerging research area • Studies differ in their objective, systems boundaries, attribution of emissions impacts etc • numerous product carbon footprint accounting methodologies - at least 13 methodologies identified in 2009 as either operational or under development (Plassman et al, 2010)
Some recent developments & implications • A number of standards eg: • the British Standards Institute PAS2050 (2008) –in review (up to 14/03/11) • World Resources Institute/World Business Council for Sustainable Development (GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain - Scope 3) – in draft. • Many standards - why is this a problem? • Some feel there are drivers towards greater GHG emissions disclosure • Different methods have different implications for stakeholders e.g. Aquaculture/feed • Confusion prohibits sharing of useful data (that could unlock efficiencies in accounting for GHG emissions) • Other sectors could drive the developments of standard? • PAS2050 under review – potential opportunity – why?
British Standard PAS2050 review • Seafish believes there is a lack of clarity on this area in seafood • Clearly there is an ‘industry conversation’ to be had concerning a common method or approach for seafood • The above review present an opportunity to drive on towards a common approach • In the review, British Standards Institute are proposing “additional requirements…for specific industry sectors or product categories may be used to supplement the requirements of the [standard]” • Ongoing discussion at: • http://energyefficientfisheries.ning.com/group/co2emissionsmethodsmetricsandstandards
