5. What does war achieve? It can defend a nation under attack or try to stop a tyrant.

The Conflict • The conflict is in an area of the world called the Middle East and is between the State of Israel and the Palestinian people. • The Palestinian people occupy areas within Israel and want their own state. This conflict is complicated and is based on the history of who owns the land. • Most people on both sides want a 2 state solution. However, this is made more complicated by the fact there is no one Palestinian area and no agreement on both sides over who should have what. • The U.N and the USA have long sought a solution. Recently Tony Blair was appointed special envoy to mediate.

11. The Reasons for the Israeli Palestinian Conflict To understand the conflict you must understand the history. • Israel existed as a Jewish state from 1000BCE to 132CE. The Romans banned Jews from living in the Area called Palestine as they revolted against Roman Rule. • The Arabs captured the area from the Romans in 636CE and it became a Muslim state. • During world War I, Britain captured the area and promised a state for the Jews and Palestinians. • After World War I Britain ruled Palestine and many Jews from Europe emigrated here to escape the Nazi regime. • After World War II the Jews revolted against British rule and set up the state of Israel. The UN recognised the state in 1948.

12. In 1967 a war erupted between Israel and the neighbouring Arab states. Israel occupied an area known as the West Bank, west of the river Jordan to protect her borders. • Israel has been ordered to give up the West Bank to the Palestinian people by the UN but has refused until the Arab states recognise Israeli borders.

13. Modern reasons for Conflict include: • Both Israel and Palestine claim Jerusalem as their capital as it is a Holy site for Muslims, Jews and Christians. • Israel has set up Jewish civilians areas in the West Bank and Gaza which angers the Palestinian people. • Palestinians feel forced out and ‘homeless’ and have reacted with suicide bombers. • To further complicate things the Palestinians are not united and split between two groups Fatah and Hamas. The US and Israel refuse to negotiate with Hamas (who won democratic leadership elections) as they believe they are terrorists.
