Reasons for the Vietnam War • Split conservatives and liberals in the post WWII era. • Developed a result of the Cold War fears. • Manifestation of the containment policy • Believed that if Vietnam became communist then surrounding countries would quickly follow.
Events that lead to the Vietnam War • Ho Chi Minh (Nationalist) leads for independence from France. • Geneva Accord: France Vietnam sign peace agreement: divide Vietnam at the 17th parallel and agree to have elections in the future for unification. • South Vietnam led by Ngo Dinh Diem refused to hold election for fear of losing. • Using backed him and starting pumping in $ citing the fear of the domino theory that lead to the United States role in the Vietnam War.
Groups of Importance • North: Ho Chi Minh, nationalist, communism, Viet Minh fighters, large amount of peasant support. • South: Ngo Dinh Diem: Catholic, anti – Buddhist, harsh against peasants, corrupt leadership.

His goal was containment which lead him to increase the number of advisors. • Approved CIA supported coup to overthrow Diem, who was also assassinated. JFK may have intended to withdraw troops.
