  2. Reasons for the Vietnam War • Split conservatives and liberals in the post WWII era. • Developed a result of the Cold War fears. • Manifestation of the containment policy • Believed that if Vietnam became communist then surrounding countries would quickly follow.

  3. Events that lead to the Vietnam War • Ho Chi Minh (Nationalist) leads for independence from France. • Geneva Accord: France Vietnam sign peace agreement: divide Vietnam at the 17th parallel and agree to have elections in the future for unification. • South Vietnam led by Ngo Dinh Diem refused to hold election for fear of losing. • Using backed him and starting pumping in $ citing the fear of the domino theory that lead to the United States role in the Vietnam War.

  4. Groups of Importance • North: Ho Chi Minh, nationalist, communism, Viet Minh fighters, large amount of peasant support. • South: Ngo Dinh Diem: Catholic, anti – Buddhist, harsh against peasants, corrupt leadership.

  5. Kennedy’s Administration • French attempted to restore their control of Southeast Asia. • Met resistance from the Nationalist forces, the Viet Minh, under the leadership of HO Chi Minh. • French were still defeated even with arms and money from the Truman and Eisenhower administration.

Kennedy’s Administration • The Geneva Accords provided that Vietnam be divided at the 17th parallel until a election could be held into communist – controlled North and non – communist South. • Claiming that the followers of Ho Chi Minh were communists directed from Moscow and Beijing and citing the domino theory. • President Kennedy Policy: Not fully committed. His goal was containment which lead him to increase the number of advisors. • Approved CIA supported coup to overthrow Diem, who was also assassinated. JFK may have intended to withdraw troops.

Kennedy’s Administration • The Viet Cong were formed as a resistance movement to the South Vietnamese government as a result of South Vietnamese government refused to hold the election because Ho Chi Minh would have won and the Eisenhower administration supported the South Vietnamese government. • US supplied support to the Viet Cong. • Determined to contain communism in the wake of the failed attempt to overthrow Cuba’s Fidel Castro.
