3. Japanese Controlled Pacific

4. Island Hopping • The U.S. Strategy of taking one Japanese controlled Island and then hopping to the next Japanese controlled Island • This strategy, although effective, cost many the lives of many American soldiers. • The Japanese were not willing to surrender after Germany and Italy surrendered on May 8, 1944

5. The Pacific Theater • Japan captured the Philippines in May 1942; took 76,000 Filipino and American prisoners on Bataan Death March; 10,000 died or were executed on the march and 15,000 died later in POW camps • China joined Allies but were quickly defeated • Battle of Coral Sea (May 1942) was a draw but kept Japanese from invading Australia

6. Iwo Jima and Okinawa • Both islands in the Pacific off of the Japanese coast • The fight for Iwo Jima began on February 19, 1945 and ended on March 16, 1945 • 6,800 deaths total (6,000 Marines) • The Fight for Okinawa began on April 1, 1945 and did not end until June 21, 1945 • 12,250 deaths total (3,340 Marines)

8. The Japanese Loss’s • The Japanese lost over 109,000 men on Okinawa alone • 3,500 of those deaths were Kamikaze deaths • It was reported that rather than surrender on Okinawa, hundreds of soldiers and civilians threw themselves from cliffs to their deaths.
