Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Esther Kim English B block Due.2/12/09
Can the teenagers of Israel and Palestine today recover from the violence they have faced all their lives? • No, it would be hard for the teenagers of that region to recover from the ongoing religious conflicts especially Palestinian teenagers.
Fact 1: It was the Jews that moved into Palestinian land • Led by Zionism, Jewsstarted to move to Palestinian land • May 14, 1948: Independent Jewish State established • UN divided land:2/3 to Israel, 1/3 to Palestine
Fact 2: The Conflict is not likely to be solved in the near future • There were 6 wars total from 1948 to 1982. • Israel launched another attack this year that killed many Palestinians. • Many peace processes failed including Oslo Accord, Camp David Summit, and Taba Summit.
Fact 3:The conflict produced many Palestinian refugees • Palestinians were expelled or fled their homes • Currently 4 million Palestinian refugees • Crowded refugee camps with poor conditions
Fact 4:Palestine is now ruled by HAMAS, a more radical group! • Does not recognize Israel as an independent state • Considered as terrorist organization • Won the election against FATAH in 2006
Fact 5:Terrorist groups are recruiting young teenagers • Frustrated teenagers turn radical. • Children have been used to transport explosives. • For example, in 2004 Israeli soldiers stopped a 14-year-old boy wearing a vest of explosives near the West Bank.
Israeli-Palestinian Conflict in Habibi • Liyana’s family were pulled out by Israeli agents for inspection (p. 34) • A Jewish man called Liyana an animal (p.95) • Parents’ disapproval of Liyana’s friendship with a Jewish friend (p. 160~)
Habibi:How one person can make the change • Liyana’s friendship with Omar: • Having a Jewish friend is considered as taboo • It is an example showing that the Jews and Arabs can get along • It shows the possibility that the younger generation can over come the conflict
Conclusion • It is hard for teenagers (esp.Palestinians) to recover from the violence because: • Jews came into Palestinian land • The war is still not over • Palestinian refugees • Hamas • Terrorists are recruiting teenagers • Habibi shows hope for the teenagers
