Geography • Location: North Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, southern border with Chad, Niger and Sudan. • Terrain: Mostly barren, flat to undulating plains, plateaus • Climate: Mediterranean along the coast; dry, extreme desert interior
Government • Type: “Jamahiriya”- governed by the populace through local councils. Libya is an Authoritarian state • Constitution: no formal document • Political System: Political Parties are banned. According to the political theory of Mu’ammar al-Gadhafi.
Foreign Policy • 1969 Quadhafi has determined Libya’s foreign policy. Quadhafi’s foreign policy goals were Arab Unity. • He closed American and British bases on Libyan territory and partially nationalized all foreign oil and commercial interests. • Promoted the use of oil embargoes, they use the oil as a political weapon to challenge the west so that the oil price will increase. • Mainly towards the United States to end their support for Israel. • Libya’s relationship with the United States has gotten worse over the years • In 2009 Quadhafi made a trip to the United Nations General Assemblyto give a speech about his country
U.S Relationship • In August 1981, Libyan jets fired on U.S aircraft participating in a routine naval exercise over international waters of the Mediterranean sea. • Due to Libyan continuing support for terrorism the United States adopted sanctions against Libya in January 1986. • Total band on direct import and export trade commercial contracts, and travel related activities. • In January 1992, the UN security Council approved resolution 731 demanding that Libya surrender the suspects, cooperate with the the Pan Am 103 and UTA 772 investigation.
Should Companies de doing business in this country? • Countries should be doing business with this country because it is has great oil reservation and they receive really good money from it. • But on the other hand there still are those dumb people that are faithful to Gadhafi even though he’s dead. • Some of those people may cause problems with other countries which may cause the country not want to do business. • Now that Gadhafi is dead the country is more independent.
Future of the Country • Now that Gadhafi is dead people won’t have to be living in fear • The country will be able to have more freedom • They also announced in 2003 that they were getting rid of all weapons of mass destruction. This is a god thing because now they don’t have to worry about getting bombed for having weapons of mass destruction.
