Reason for Survey To identify the causes of Acetylene cylinder incidents and where possible prevent them from occurring To resolve Acetylene cylinder incidents safely and efficiently when they do occur To ensure Fire Service and BCGA operational procedures are being fully utilised Mitigate the disruption caused to the public by Acetylene cylinder incidents
Methodology of Survey A database has been compiled of all cylinder incidents in London since the 1st January 2004 An investigation into every Acetylene cylinder incident in that period has been undertaken Time lines have been created for every Acetylene cylinder incident in 2007
Findings of Survey Statistics have been compiled in the following areas:- The numbers of all types of cylinder incidents When cylinder contents are identified at incidents The use of Acetylene cylinders when involved in fire The causes of Acetylene cylinder incidents The outcome of suspected Acetylene cylinder incidents The numbers of Acetylene cylinders that have failed in fire When Acetylene cylinders fail in fire The wet testing of Acetylene cylinders involved in fire

Actions resulting from Survey The inclusion of Acetylene cylinders in the Fire Safety Audit of premises Improvements to the BCGA Competent Person Procedure in London Extra training for Specialist Officers in the London Fire Brigade in hazard zone management A trial of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)
Outcomes Since the launch of the Safe Cylinder Campaign on 14th August 2007 there have been 3 Acetylene cylinder incidents in London. Prior to this there had been 17 in 2007. Since specialist officers have received hazard zone management training, in London there have been 4 DA incidents . The 200m zone was safely reduced to 10m within 2, 2, 4 and 2 hours respectively at these incidents . Prior to this in 2007 the average time to reduce the zone to 10m was 19 hours
