Instrumental period • Before 1860: Observations made by individuals and occasional networks • From 1860: First national meteorological services and observational networks 1837: arrival of the electrical telegraph 1653: establishment of the oldest observational network in Toscane by Ferdinand II from the Accademia del Cimento
DARE….Why? The requirement for information on trends and change – makes historical data as important as new observations (GCOS, 2nd adequacy rep 2003) Adaptation of natural and human systems to the impacts of natural and anthropogenic climate change is not optional. In many countries neither the quality nor quantity of observations needed is adequate to allow reliable projections needed for adaptation purposes (GCOS Contribution to the Nairobi Work Programme 2007) Brussels, 29 June 2007 – Press Release EC Climate change: Europe must take adaptation measures to lessen impacts of current and future warming Climate change poses a double challenge: Europe must not only make deep cuts in its greenhouse gas emissions but also take measures to adapt to current and future climate change in order to lessen the adverse impacts of global warming on people, the economy and the environment. This is the key message of a Green Paper published by the European Commission today which sets out options for EU action to help the process of adaptation to climate change across Europe. Adaptation means taking action to cope with changing climatic conditions, for example by using scarce water resources more efficiently or ensuring the frail and elderly are properly cared for during heatwaves. The Green Paper aims to stimulate a broad public debate on adaptation in Europe.
