Cornelius Vanderbilt was a Entrepreneur, American industrialist, and philanthropist Cornelius Vanderbilt started as a small steamboat business owner, but slowly his business grew until he competed with the monopolies and succeeded. He was the patriarch of the Vanderbilt family. He was one of the richest Americans in history.

When art thou perished? Vanderbilt was born May 27th 1794 in Staten Island New York He died on January 4th 1877 in New York, New York He lived to be 82

Where for art thou ‘Robber Baron’? Vanderbilt could be considered a Robber Baron because of the secret partnerships he kept with David Drew, a former competitor. He made few contributions to society. Vanderbilt continued to cut his prices so that he would beat out the monopolies, and not have to compete. During the civil war he sold vessels to the US navy at high prices, but the ships were in such bad shape that some would sink before leaving port. After civil war he would hire lawyers to steal land from settlers and Indians so that he could build his railroads on that land.
