  3. Today’s Objective… • Today we are going to analyze the war in the Pacific using this lecture and textbooks.

  4. Japan Seeks a Pacific Empire • Japan tries to expand their empire in 1931 into Manchuria China and the U.S. denounce their actions. • Japan attacks the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and the United States declares war. • Victories in the Pacific and Asia give Japan a vast empire.

  5. Allies Strike Back • Allied bombing of Tokyo shows the Japanese are vulnerable. • The Allies win significant naval battles by striking with planes from aircraft carries. • The Allied strategy of island hopping brings them closer to Japan.

  6. Processing… • Read pages 497-501 in your books. • Create a chart that lists the FOUR battles events of the war in the Pacific between 1941 and 1943 and its effect. • Then answer the following questions… • Which event was most important in turning the tide of the war in the Pacific against the Japanese and why? • Who are Admiral Yamamoto and General MacArthur and why are they important?
