SETTING THE STAGE • THE SITUATION IN EUROPE AFTER WORLD WAR II IS A SCENE OF DESPAIR AND DESTRUCTION. 60 MILLION WERE KILLED AS A RESULT OF BATTLE, GENOCIDE, AND BOMBINGS. ANOTHER 50 MILLION EUROPEANS WERE HOMELESS AS A RESULT OF THE DEVASTATION. IN ADDITION, THERE IS BILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGE DONE TO CITIES.
Postwar Japan • General Douglas MacArthur took charge of the U.S. occupation of Japan. • Wanted to be fair and not to plant the seeds of future war. • Demilitarization • Disbanding the Japanese armed forces. • Brought war criminals to trial. • Many were put to death. • Democratization • Process of creating a gov’t elected by the people. • Constitutional monarchy
Occupation Brings Changes • The Japanese emperor had to declare that he wasn’t divine ruler. • Became a figurehead—a symbol of Japan. • The parliament (Diet) and prime minister had the real power. • All citizens over the age of 20 had the right to vote. • Article 9 of the Japanese constitution stated that the Japanese could only wage war if they were attacked. • The U.S. and Japan now become allies. • The U.S. and the Soviet Union became bitter enemies.
Economic Results • Cost was around $900 Billion, most expensive war ever • European and Asian countries are destroyed and needed economic recovery • Total war gutted cities all over Europe and Asia • Communism spreads in Eastern Europe and parts of Asia • Stalin helps communist parties take control
Social Results • 60 Million civilians and soldiers were killed • 50 million refugees and displaced persons were uprooted by the war
Political Results • Some countries are able to quickly return to normal life. • Belgium, Holland, Norway & Denmark • Germany, Italy & Japan are defeated and governments are overthrown • Allies replace them with democratic governments to protect citizens rights • U.S. & USSR become the two World Super Powers • Beginning of the “Cold War!”
Soviet Union establishes satellite nations • Czech, Poland, East Germany • Western Imperialism begins to fall • World Enters the “Atomic Age” • United Nations is formed to keep world peace
Nuremberg trials • Allied Leaders punish those responsible for “crimes against humanity” • 22 Nazi Leaders were tried at Nuremberg, Germany • Some received the death penalty while other imprisonment • Trials show leaders were held accountable for their actions during the war
