What is a Community Development Trust? • Community Organisation owned & managed by the local community • Aims: • Tackle local issues (economic / environmental / social / cultural) & improve quality of life • Generate income through enterprise & ownership of assets to reduce dependency on local authorities /grant support
Who are we? • Set up under auspices of Cove and Kilcreggan Community Council • A company with charitable status has been created and registered • 15 Directors have been appointed to the board • Cross section of community selected to ensure a range of views
The Need for A Trust • Rectify the Decline in local amenities • Lack of Investment by local authority • A need to encourage investment from other sources • A need to retain and engage local youth • Encourage Community Involvement • Good route to access funding as communities are encouraged to help themselves
Objectives • The Advancement of Education • The Advancement of Health • The Advancement of Citizenship or Community Development • The Advancement of Human Rights • The Advancement of The Arts, Heritage, Culture or Science
Progress so Far • Trust set up • Funding applications made • Need identified for Community Action Plan • Consultation with 4 other development trusts

Community Action Plan • The funding so far will go towards a Community action plan • Preferred candidate identified to undertake Action Plan • Intended to set out the vision for the local area • Based on views and requirements of the local community • Provide a shortlist of projects to focus delivery on

Arrochar & Tarbet CDT • Formed in 2003 • Limited company & registered Scottish Charity with volunteer directors • Grants-based CDT • Main objective to provide a new village hall for the communities of Arrochar, Tarbet & Succoth (“The Three Villages”) • “The Campus” now includes the “Pit Stop”; full-time employees
Arrochar & Tarbet CDT • Formed in 2003 • Limited company & registered Scottish Charity with volunteer directors • Grants-based CDT • Main objective to provide a new village hall for the communities of Arrochar, Tarbet & Succoth (“The Three Villages”) • “The Campus” now includes the “Pit Stop”; full-time employees
The Three Villages Hall • Funding from: • National Lottery • LEADER • A & B Council • Building completed & opened early this year • Used by local community & external organisations (generates income) • Next project: marine access to the Campus via village pier
Renton CDT • Running Community Projects for over 30 yrs • CDT Established in 2003 as umbrella organisation; Ltd company, charitable status • Initially 100% grant funded; now profit-based • Works with sister-organisation Cordale Housing Association (CHA): • Sheltered & affordable housing • Doctor’s surgery & chemist • Created jobs for over 150 local people • Generates own income & re-invests • Next projects – more housing; new school?
Fintry CDT • Established 2007; Ltd company, charitable status • Aims: to reduce energy use in the village; ultimately making the village a zero-carbon, zero-waste community • Trading subsidiary: Fintry Renewable Energy Enterprise (FREE) established 2004 • FREE has secured ownership of a wind turbine (1 of 15 owned by local developers)
Fintry Wind Turbine • Paying for the turbine over 15 years • Income: • £50,000-£100,000 per annum while cost of turbine is being repaid • Approx. £400,000 (gross)per annum thereafter • Investing income in a project to insulate local homes • 46% of homes have free cavity wall & roof insulation
Strathfillan CDT • Established 1997; Ltd company, charitable status • Consists of villages of Crianlarich & Tyndrum; population 398; few local facilities • Grants-based CDT • Planted 160,000 trees; purchased c.100 ha of woodland from Forestry Commission • Created a play park in Tyndrum • Provided low-cost rental housing for local residents
