It is revered by Muslims as an Islamic relic which, according to Muslim tradition, dates back to the time of Adam and Eve.
The Life of Muhammad • An Arab man who was troubled by the world and began to meditate • He received revelations from Allah. • These revelations were written down in the Quran • Quran holy book of the religion of Islam • Those who practice Islam are called Muslims
Arab Empire and its successors • Muhammad died and Abu Bakr took leadership of the Arab’s • Muslim leader who used Jihad ( Struggle in the way of God) to unite the empire • Umayyads Empire- rules after Abu Bakr were tensions within the religion caused a split
Arab Empire and its successors • Muslim religion split in two groups • Shite Muslims-believe that only God has the right to choose a representative to safeguard Islam • Sunni Muslims- that there is no basis in Islam for a privileged class of spiritual leaders ( any body can lead that believes)
Crusades • The Christian and Islamic world feared and disliked each other • A series of Crusades begun in 1096 • Christian forces were finally destroyed in 1187 • Crusade’s goal of restoring Christian access to the holy places in and near Jerusalem failed.
Islamic Civilization • Overall the period of the Arab empire was prosperous • Buildings included palaces for bazaars (trading center)for trading
Islamic society • All people were equal in the eyes of Allah • But slaves were seen as less than • Slaves could not become Muslims • Slaves were captured from war and used as servants • Quran granted Woman spiritual and social equity with men, but men were dominant, woman rights were diminished over time
Muslim Woman • burqa -enveloping outer garment worn by women in some Islamic traditions to cover their bodies when in public.
