  3. THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM • What is Respiration? • We need to breathe. • Organs of the respiratory system. • Breathing air. • Motion of breathing.

  4. What is RESPIRATION? • Respiration is the act of taking air into the lungs and pushing it out.

  5. We need to breathe • We breathe automatically because our body needs oxygen from the air to stay alive.

  6. ORGANS of the RESPIRATORY SYSTEM The RESPIRATORY SYSTEM has these main parts: • Nasal Cavity • Trachea • Bronchi • Bronchioles • Lungs • Alveoli

  7. Breathing air When we breathe, the air: • Enters the body through the nose or the mouth. • Travels down through the trachea (windpipe). • Goes into the lungs through two tubes called bronchi. • They divide into smaller tubes called bronchioles. • These ones end in tiny air sacs called alveoli.

  8. The Motion of Breathing • When we breathe in, the lungs fill with air. • When we breathe out, the air goes out and the lungs empty.

  9. Inhalation • Breathing in: our diaphragm moves down and our ribs move out.

  10. Exhalation • Breathing out: our diaphragm moves up and our ribs move back.

  11. The lungs • Our lungs are like to sponges full of tiny air tubes.
