Strength • 413 PG candidates including 253 PhD • Ample workstation for students • Supervision staff:student is 1:5 • Multi-disciplinary research • Young academics are excited to supervise
CONCERNS Declining admission applications (Drop of almost 50%). In PhD studies, Malaysians are less than international students Uneven distribution of supervision Quality of supervision. Procedure/regulation awareness among students, supervisors & examination panel. Plagiarism. GOTs: UTM is 36 months, MyRA2 is 42 months Low IF publication relative to the Engineering faculties Others (see next list).
Irregularities done by PG candidates • Not presence at the faculty to attend colloquiums, workshops, open talks and seminars. As a result, his or her workstation is generally unoccupied at B12 or B07. Thus he or she is void from peer discussion and peer instruction. • Pestering supervisors to approve an thesis even though the supervisors are not fully satisfied with his or her submission. • Not participating in PGSS activities • Being a superman: (1) Being editor-in-chief, (2) practicing a full-time job, doing MBA at UPM and doing PhD at UTM, (3) Claiming reviewer of an IF journal not relevant to his discipline of study
Irregularities done by PG candidates • Submitting thesis at deadline of submission leaving little time for PG Offices to check the accuracy of the thesis • Most Zamalah scholars failed to assist PGSS activities. • Full time students only come to the faculty at progress report presentation.
Irregularities done by supervisor mentioned by candidates • Non-authors in my journal and conference papers • Supervisor did not read my thesis thoroughly before submitting to SPS for viva • Supervisor took three months to read my first draft • Supervisor failed to keep his or her promise on appointment to discuss my research progress • Supervisor was not critical in advising my research
Irregularities done by supervisor and graduate faculties mentioned by PG Office • Not knowing the requirements of thesis as stipulated in UTM Thesis Manual • Not adding new examiners in GSMS • Refusal to become chairman and assistant chairman • Asking for favor from examiner before the viva
