  3. Primary Succession • Is the development of a community in an area that has not previously supported life.

  4. Secondary Succession • Is the sequential replacement of species that follows a disruption of an existing community.

  5. Pioneer Species • Tend to be small fast growing and fast reproducing.

  6. Lichens

  7. Climax Community • The traditional description of succession is that the community proceeds through a predictable series of stages until it reaches a stable endpoint.
