  2. The Issue: We would like to address a problem that affects everyone in America, young or old, driver or passenger– this is the safety of the roads. We are concerned that a large part of the reason that roads are unsafe is that the state-administered test required to get a drivers’ license is too simple, and does not cover enough material to adequately gauge a new driver’s ability to drive safely.

Personal Experiences “I remember the driver's test that I took on my last day of Driver's Ed.  It went over almost everything we learned and was challenging.  When I went to the DMV to get my driver's license a few months later, the driver's test was way too easy.  All they made me do was drive around the block.  So, they'll let a 17-year-old girl on the road because they saw her stop at a couple stop signs and make a few right turns?  The test should include way more than that.  I mean, I was happy that the test was easy, but at the same time, I was angry.  Just imagine all the uneducated people they are allowing on the road because they could make a few right turns.  No wonder there are so many accidents!  The driver's test should allow the driver to prove that they will follow the rules of the road and act properly in a time of crisis.” –Rebekah, teen driver

  4. The number of drivers involved in fatal crashes is higher in the age group of new drivers than any other age group. We believe this could be solved by revising the drivers test to get your license.   6. Proposed Action: We believe that the drivers test should be remade to cover more material, so that it can measure more accurately the readiness of a new driver to be on the road. Make sure they have the ability to get out of tight situations, and accurately judge timing and spacing. Also, another idea is to have them say what they’re doing as they’re going, so it’s clear that they understand what they’re doing, what rules apply to their decision, and why they chose that action. This information should be sent to the Secretary of State and also to the Department of Transportation in Congress.
