Steele worked with the Gang Unit in some of the most dangerous areas of Boston like; Dorchester, South Boston, and Jamaica Plain. While on the Gang Unit, Steele has always maintained a positive connection with the communities he has policed. Steele started showing strong leadership skills while he was in high school, and he went on to become the captain of his football team. As a youth rehabilitation counselor Steele showed patience and commitment in helping young people with their problems.

In his years of service, he has always shown a propensity to help with the fundamental causes of crime. Mel Steele of Boston grew up in Mattapan where he witnessed gang violence first hand. Steele attended Westwood High School through the METCO program and went on to get his degree in Sociology from the University of Delaware.

Growing up, Steele was witness to gang violence and wanted to do something to help. After graduating from the University of Delaware with a degree in Sociology, he joined the New Castle County Detention Center in Delaware to help the troubled youth. Steele has since helped by maintaining a positive connection with the communities he has policed. After graduating from the University of Delaware, Mel Steele of Boston joined the New Castle County Detention Center in Delaware. Steele joined the Youth Violence Strike Force after becoming a police office and was actively involved in keeping violence off the streets of Boston.
