Introduction • Myths in education • What do you need? • Approach • Available resources • Gaining involvement by staff
Myths • “Educated people are not homophobic...” • “We have never had an occurrence reported....” • “We don't need to single LGBT staff out as needing extra support here...” • “We have a policy that protects all our staff.”
What do you need? • What you DON’T need • A large budget • External consultants • A complete policy rewrite • A large “out” presence or employee network group • What you DO need • Time • A dedicated lead • Management support • A strong diversity champion
Approach • Target 5 priority areas per year for improvement • Agree the areas of improvement with LGBT staff • Allocate a person as the lead for each area and goals • Regular group meetings of the leads (small and controlled) • Feed back to management, staff and your external stakeholders • Ask for help from the resources you have!
Available Resources • Your own staff and services • Communications office • Human Resources / Equalities Units • Academic legal department • Benefits provided by being a Stonewall Champion • Expert advice • Experience of other education establishments issues • Assistance in tailoring to an LGBT point of view
Gaining staff involvement • Newsletters • Social events • Web forums • Mentoring Schemes • Employee network and support groups • Policy group for highly motivated members
